How to prepare your students for the end of the knowledge age?

The COVID driven shift from classroom to online learning was not something that anyone could have seen coming. It brought into sharp focus the need for creative problem solving, even in a sector which has adapted technology to the classroom so well.


What does our new reliance on technology mean to the retention of the basic human need to connect and this to learn which teachers facilitate so well? Will we move away from using technology as a tool to being spectators in a world driven by AI and Robot Process Automation?


Social Media gives us a dark preview of a possible outcome. Our reliance on the dopamine hit of a like or comment has consequences on our perception of life, depression, insecurities, anxiety, focus issues, and instant gratification addiction.


Technology has us pinned against the wall, a willing prisoner and a willing spectator.

As automation takes away the mundanities that knit our lives together what is left? Are we drivers in our lives, or just consumers of content?


As a professional educator, you might feel reasonable frustration that educational practices are not keeping pace with the needs of the post-AI workforce and the wellness needs of a population in the throes of a technology (and now) lockdown driven mental health crisis.


You might think that we should be helping children understand how to have meaningful relationships, make career choices driven by purpose and leave our educational system equipped with the confidence and courage to like life with intent.


But that doesn’t sound right does it?

Dr. George Land and Dr. Beth Jarman found that 98% of 5 years olds test at the genius level in creativity. By 10 that was 30%, by 15 it was 12%. By the age of 31 only 2% were left.

What are we doing wrong?

The currency of the AI age will be creativity, synthesis, innovation, context, empathy and storytelling. None of these are served by a system of education skewed towards traditional Left Brain Thinking.


Creativity is at the core of our potential to be a partner of AI and not a slave to it.  As a professional and passionate educator now is the time to ask the deeper, harder, more meaningful questions.


·       Are we preparing our children for the next turning in history?

·       Are we sleepwalking into Elon Musk’s dream of being connected to the cloud?

We must re-think our approach at a fundamental level.
